GapZap Online Staffing Service
Overview
GapZap is an online temporary staffing service that helps dental offices find short-term and long-term temporary workers. This job site specializes in dental jobs and is enriched with community features.
The Business
GapZap Inc., the investment company, wanted to launch a start-up dedicated to the temporary and long-term staffing needs of dental practices across the USA. It's a more cost-effective and efficient solution than using a regular staffing agency, as more businesses are going online to fulfill their staffing needs. Dentists have to be able to take control of their own staffing issues instead of relying on and paying someone else for this service. There are a lot of competitors in the market, but they offer only a job database without any long-term staffing strategy.
The company has had a lot of experience with web development. GapZap Inc. achieved already knew that without a well-defined user interface and functional specifications, it's easy to have an unjustified budget increase and loss of time; this is the usual result of unresolved issues appearing during the development process. It's also critical to have an easily usable interface when one of the goals of the project is to collect a rich pool of returning users when the competition is high. That's the reasons GapZap Inc. turned to UI Modeling Company.
The Solution
After an initial discussion with stakeholders, UI Modeling Company defined personas that describe key users of the system. This allowed us to have a clear vision of who website users are, what their goals are, and which use cases are critical. We needed to build navigational maps and page flows that covered all the requested functionality and helped users achieve their goals easily and effectively. This initial phase gave us the vision for how the functionality should be presented on the user interface and how the specification plan should be written.
After the plan was complete, the key phase of the process was started: the creation of user interface page layout or wireframes. Based on the page flows, we started to design wireframes as the part of the whole process, not as single independent pages. This meant that if we had designed, for example, user registration functionality, we kept the registration page in context — which was important for how users reached this page and where they needed to go next. This allowed us to keep user goals in mind throughout the design process and have a user-centered interface as the result. To find out if there were any usability problems, an internal usability test was conducted. As the result of this test, the navigation and dashboard were improved.
The rest of the process was more about writing than design; use cases and software requirement specifications were created. All the deliverables were cross-referenced and described in detail. One of the aims of these specifications was to create comfortable and detailed reading for project management and development teams.
The Result
After the project was finished, GapZap Inc. was ready to start development. The company received a user interface model with all the functionality questions settled with a user-centered approach. The company also received a production manual that described to the development team how to implement this user interface. As soon as the software requirement specification was done, the project management team was able to have a precise project plan.
As a result, GapZap service users have received a useful tool for building long-term job strategies and one-time hiring — easily, quickly, and effectively. With a set of additional tools that helps dental offices find appropriate dental staff, the GapZap website will be a useful service.
The ROI
By creating the user interface design and production manual up front, GapZap Inc. saved money on development. But the most important result of the project was a usable and well-thought-out user interface that should lead to a high visitor-to-customer conversion rate.
