SchoolTelligent
Overview
SchoolTelligent is an online knowledge base that helps schoolteachers, managers, and other related people monitor educational activities. The application is good at knowledge management — the main goal of this project.
The Business
DyTelligent Technologies, Inc., received a request to develop a web application for K-12 schools to store and manage statistical information. The product, named SchoolTelligent, had to deal with odd and disconnected information: data was broken into pieces and stored in incompatible technology systems. This made combining the data a difficult task, even for technically savvy professionals. Furthermore, leading market information systems can only store three to five years of data, but the client typically required data analysis spanning ten years. Finally, despite the Internet's availability in each classroom, teachers had no easy way of sending targeted information to students and their parents.
A large number of users and massive amounts of data — that's a challenge for not only performance analysts but usability professionals too. The application should be easy to work with, the information should be easy to find and sort, and users shouldn't spend hours fighting with the user interface. In addition, SchoolTelligent is an expandable system, with the list of subapplications to be added in the near future. That's the reason DyTelligent turned to UI Modeling for usability guidance.
The Solution
First, UI Modeling Company analyzed the project specifications and existing user interface. This allowed us to define personas that describe key users of the system. After all the initial steps, we built navigational maps and page flows that covered all the existing functionality of SchoolTelligent. This analysis identified what was good and bad in the current UI — what features should be kept and what should be redesigned.
As part of the user interface evaluation, UI Modeling Company experts reviewed all the pages of the system separately and as the part of the users' processes. This evaluation resulted in a list of user interface issues to be resolved. A detailed report of these issues was presented to DyTelligent Technologies. In discussing the issues with the client, we learned about technological and political considerations for prospective changes in user interface.
The last phase of the process was to demonstrate how to resolve these issues. UI Modeling Company designed wireframes of updated SchoolTelligent pages with all the reported fixes applied. And at the end of the process, a visual design of the web application was updated by our partner company.
The Result
DyTelligent Technologies received a new look and feel for their product, and it is now more efficient and easier to use. The core component of the system, the reports wizard, became simpler without losing any of its features. The same can be said about the rest of the SchoolTelligent UI: it's more comfortable to use.
As for the development team, they received instructions for the redesign. The project specifications had no detailed wireframes before, but now they're in the documentation pack. And they wouldn't become just another set of archived and forgotten papers — SchoolTelligent is constantly growing, and the wireframes will definitely be helpful in these developments.
The ROI
By conducting an evaluation of usability and redesigning user interface, DyTelligent Technologies reduced the number of support requests. And, of course, their increased user loyalty was an important achievement of this new design.
