User Interface Design
Why?
Whether a new system is in development or an existing one needs redesign, a user interface should be created. User interface (or UI, as it is often called) is what the system is from a user's perspective. Strong user interface with a high usability rate is not just an added bonus, it's now more and more critical for the success of a product. It's an advantage compared to competitors. ROI for user interface modeling and design is shown in savings on product development and life cycle, better product quality, and increased user loyalty.
The Solution
Preliminary user interface elaboration is one of the keys to a product being adopted by users and stakeholders. This elaboration means that both page layouts and interactions should be defined and specified in detail. What information does the user need to know, and what will only overload the user? What information should user provide, and what can be collected by the system itself? What is more effective for the user's task, a wizard or something else?
All these questions and many others should be resolved by user interface design documents — wireframes that define page content and layouts, use cases that define user interactions and their sequence, software requirement specifications that define business rules, and a visual design that defines the user interface look and feel. Elaboration can also be used for marketing and sales needs — the HTML prototype will simulate the real system and let stakeholders and users try it long before any money is spent on development. A video or slide presentation based on the visual design and HTML prototype will tell the story about the system.

Results
At the end of the User Interface Design process, there is a series of documents produced and delivered to the client:
- Wireframes. A set of graphic documents that describe page layouts.
- Use Cases. A set of text documents that describe page navigation and interactions.
- Software Requirement Specification. A text document that describes business rules and functionality in detail.
- Visual Design Mockups. A set of graphic documents that define visual design.
- HTML Prototype. A set of clickable pages that simulate the real system.
- Video or Slide Presentation. A video movie or slide show that demonstrates the overall project, with pages of the application and its background.
The set of deliverables may be customized, depending on client needs, but it should contain at least the wireframes.
